Interesting cricket statistics & facts

Batting:

  • Steve Waugh is the only player to hit over 150 runs in an innings vs all test countries (playing at the time). As pappubahry has pointed out, Bannerman was actually the first to do this 100+ years ago ;p.
  • Shane Warne is the leading run scorer of all time that has never hit a century (145 matches, 3154 runs)
  • the 3 highest averaging test cricketers, that have played more tests than Bradman, are all english - Sutcliffe (1924-35, 60.73), Barrington (1955-68, 58.67) and Hammond (1927-47, 58.45). Next is Sobers, followed by 2 more english cricketers - before we get to Ricky Ponting.
  • Lara & Tendulkar were the quickest to reach 10k runs, both taking 195 innings. Ponting needed 196 - the others took 206 (Dravid), 212 (Gavaskar), 217 (kallis), 235 (Border), 244 (Waugh). Interestingly, it took Tendulkar 103 innings to reach 5k runs, Lara took 104. Bradman took 56.
  • Gilchrist has hit most 6s in test cricket - 100 in 137 innings. Only Afridi has hit more 6s than he has had innings (50 in 46). Cairns (87 in 104), Gilchrist and Flintoff (81 in 123) are top3 for the % of 6s in innings (that have hit more than 50 6s).
  • although hitting relatively few 6s (51 in 269 innings), Tendulkar has hit the most 4s with at least 1676 of them.
  • only 3 players have hit 2 300s - Sehwag, Lara & Bradman. Bradman would have had 3, but he got out on 299 once. As Stuart has pointed out, Bradman was actually not out.
  • By Tilly: only one player has scored centuries in five consecutive tests - Everton Weekes for WI. Only one player has hit 5 100s in a test series, Clyde Walcott for WI vs Australia in 1954/55 (plenty have hit 4).
  • Mohammad Yousuf hit 9 centuries in 2006, with an avg of 99.33 - 9 centuries in 19 innings. Next for most centuries in a calendar year is Ponting, 7 in 18. Bradman's best yearly performances were 5 centuries in 9 and 13 innings, with yearly averages of 105 and 113. Arguably the best performance in a calendar year was by Sobers in 1958, averaging 148, with 6 100s in 13 innings.
  • Garfield Sobers' maiden test 100 (at a time when he was averaging ~28-30 with the bat) was his world record 365* against pakistan in 1958.
  • 6 players have hit centuries in their 100th test, only Ponting has scored a 100 in both innings though, against SA in 2006.

  • Boycott was 41, and Gooch nearly 41, when they hit their last 100 for England (1981/94). The oldest ever was Hobbs, 46 in 1929.
  • The fastest 100 ever is off 56 balls, by Viv Richards. Next is Gilchrist off 57 balls. Interesting, Chanderpaul is 4th, needing 69 balls in 2002 vs Australia. Interestingly, it was also this year that he took 510 balls to hit 136 against India, one of the slowest innings ever.
  • The fastest 200 ever is by Nathan Astle, off 153 balls. It was in the last innings vs england, NZ trying to draw the match. Astle played a blistering innings, but got out and NZ lost. The only other 2 200s scored at faster than a run a ball are by sehwag, both went on to be 300s, one of which was off 278 balls. Indeed, Sehwag has hit 4 out of the 8 fastest 200s - he has hit 5 in total.
  • Only two players have hit 2 100s on their test debut - Rowe for WI in 1972, Hameed for Pakistan in 2003.
  • Jason Gillespie amazed people when he hit 201* against Bangladesh in 2006. It was also his last match for Australia, putting him in an elite group with de Silva (206, 2002) and Sandham (325, 1930) for scoring double centuries in their last matches. Gillespie's previous best was 48*, with an avg of 15.4
  • Graham Gooch has hit the most runs in a match, 1990 vs india - 456 runs including his 333. Unusually for performances like this, the match wasn't drawn and England actually won.

Bowling:

  • Wasim Akram was the first player to take 400 wickets in both test and ODI cricket. Only Muralithuran has equalled this achievement since.
  • Muralithuran has the most wickets, 770. McGrath has the most for a non-spinner, 4th overall, 563 wickets at an avg of 21.64, including 29 f-fors and 3 10wicket hauls. Muri has 66 5-fors and 22 10wicket hauls. Sickening.
  • Only bowlers with an avg below 21 (that have taken over 200 wickets) are west indian - Ambrose (20.99, 405), Marshall (20.94, 376) and Garner (20.97, 259). Ambrose and Marshall both took 22 5-fors, but Marshall took 1 more 10 wicket haul with 4. These 3 bowlers have the best avg out of all that have played at least 45 matches.
  • only 2 players have taken 10 wickets in an innings - Laker for England in 1956 and Kumble for India in 1999. Muralitharan has taken 9 wickets in an innings twice. It should be noted that Laker also took 9 wickets in the second innings of that ashes match - 19 in total. He took 46 wickets in that series in total - 2nd of all time, behind Barnes who took 49 for england in 1913/14.
  • Alderman is the only bowler to have taken 40 wickets in a series twice, both against england in england (for asutralia) in 1981 and 1989.
  • Warne has taken the most wickets in a year - 96 in 2005, including 40 in the ashes. Muri is 2nd, with 90 in 11 matches in 2006.
  • Waqar younis has the best strike rate that has played more than 33 matches - 43.44. Darel Steyn for SA is pushing him close though, he has a SR of 39.2 in his first 33 matches.
  • only player to have taken a hat-trick in both innings oa a match was Matthews for Australia in 1912.
  • There have only been 37 hattricks in history of test cricket. 20 of these have come in the past 20yrs.
  • Allom (1930), Petherick (1977) and Damien Fleming (1994) took hattricks on their debuts.
  • Griffin took a hattrick for SA in 1960. He only took 8 test wickets in total.
  • two bowlers have taken hattricks in their opening over - pathan for India, 2005 and Zoysa for SL in 2000. Zoysa took his off the first 3 balls of his over.
  • Wasim Akram took two hattricks in the same series against SL in 1998. He is also one of only 3 players to take 4 wickets in 5 balls, against west indies in 1990-1. He has also taken 3 wickets in 4balls twice. He is also the only player to have taken 2 test hattricks and 2 ODI hattricks.
  • the most impressive hattricks is arguably (very arguably as you'll see a few posts below!) Harbhajan Singh's against australia in 2000. He dismissed Ponting, Gilchrist and Warne.
  • only 6 players have dismissed all 11 batsmen in a match - these include Laker, Muralitharan and Younis.
  • since 1956, only 3 times have a team been bowled out without changing the opening bowlers. These partnerships were Ambrose/Walsh (1994 vs Eng), Akram/Younis (1994 vs SL) and McGrath/Gillespie (1999 vs WI).
  • Since 1926, the fastest bowlers to 200 wickets are Younis and Lillee (38 matches) & Botham/MacGill (41). The fastest to 300 wickets are Lillee (56) and muri (5
